Over the past two decades, psychologists have made major contributions to the development of crisis/hostage negotiation techniques and have performed a variety of roles and functions. These techniques, when implemented by police agencies, have sharply reduced both injuries and loss of life in field situations. Psychologists and other clinicians have now participated in a range of roles, each with specific advantages and disadvantages.Since the birth of the discipline of crisis/hostage negotiations there has been an increase in the percentage of agencies that make use of psychologists as consultants to their crisis/hostage negotiation teams. Acceptance of the contributions of psychologists to these teams by law enforcement is noted.
